ImageAfter reading through the comments that Leroy Clarke made in his latest work, I have to say that I find it to have a few stimulating debate topics but quickly ended up distressing then downright ridiculous. Looking as objectively as possible and not being swayed by public opinion I read through and understand his concern with the issue of gender lines given his beliefs, but what followed was quickly a both sad and mad leap into an insane asylum of ‘rationale’ attempting to explain that homosexuality is a driving factor in gang-activity. He made a point in theorizing that some young men would resort to the gun as an outward expression of a hidden insecurity, but the way it was overemphasized and sloppily tied in reduced a possible issue to explore the thought of into a drunken sounding debacle of intellectual vomit.

ImageThe issue of blurring Gender lines vs specific and separate purpose for each Sex, is one that runs deep in beliefs on both sides and was an interesting debate to bring up. He went into the past depictions in carnival costumes, where one was undoubtedly male and the other undoubtedly female, to current day where there seems to be little difference. In all fairness I think that sections like Tribe “Butterfly” section for both men and women was a bit odd, albeit funny. I’m surprised however that an elder such as Leroy made no mention of the classic Trini Comedies where straight men would dress up as women, which is part of the cultural Theater. This can be rebutted though saying the majority of them make no attempt to hide their masculinity, but the root of this being a play on gender roles was conveniently left out, making a debate far from where he was going. It was summed up that the homosexual population/agenda has damaged the arts, but many will argue with conviction and evidence that without the input and involvement of many homosexuals there would be but a fraction of “Art” left in TnT.

Now the bigger stir and the Meat of the issue, the ‘Gay Agenda’ linked to increase gang-activity. It is true that there are young men who have been abused sexually at a young age, as well as those who have this sexual preference feeling repressed in a more traditional community/family, who resort to violence as an outward expression of inner rage. However, how much does this account for? Any educated guess would tell the tale of this being possibly one of the lowest factors contributing to gang growth, and the attack was so targeted and far stretching that it was revealed as an ignorant attack on sexuality rather than the abuse the could cause the problem in the first place.

ImageOne thing this can produce however (and has to some extent) is an anti-religious push by those on the receiving end of the bashing, given that Leroy quoted scripture briefly. Those who fire back with this prejudice are guilty of pushing the same kind of hate and nonsense that is being pushed against them. Deal with the issue itself, decipher, defuse, and debunk, rather than dis, disrespect, and discriminate. If there is anything that Leroy’s deep dive into senility, mid-analysis, can teach us is a need to dig deeper into issues that flair our tempers…and of course to beware of particularly stylish men lurking around in groups. In short, *cue the parang beat* Leroy, Where yuh Mind Gone?

A month has quickly passed as 2014 can in quick and hard, holding the hope of the Nation for a better TnT than 2013. What we are seeing so far is a mad jumble and scramble in every direction for answers, only to find more horrifying questions around every turn. Drug busts have us turning to the US without Authority, Crime has us turning to the Hangman without Rope, The Economy has us turning to the Su-su without a Hand to chip in, and the general state of politics has us turning to Short-Pants Politician in Long Pants Politics. As we try to look forward, the Smog over Port-of-Spain was a grim metaphor showing us that we are in a mess with no vision ahead.

cocaine-drinkFollowing a US$100M Drug Bust by the US, the DEA (Drug Detection Agency USA) sends more than 50 Officers to Trinidad and Tobago’s Shores. Under normal circumstances the Government would have given them a much warmer welcome, but upon realizing that they were not here to Play Mas and came with the names of 3 big businessmen who they needed evidence on to take back with them, the tone changed. The Silence across the political board was unlike any other that we have experienced. After 10 days of impatiently waiting for the PM to address the nation on the issue, she makes a statement acting as if Trinidad and Tobago is being picked on and that “we” assisted in the Drug Bust. The US DEA Regional Director quickly stated that the DEA alone found it, and the Nation in an even quicker manner released a collective “Stueps” quicker than one can recognize a can of Trinidad made Orange Juice.

clueless_1640315Of course the recent Drug Busts are just reflective of the major Crime epidemic that we are facing. In one month the Murder toll hit 47. The Government still claims that they are on top of the mounting situation and are doing well, although it should be noted that many Ministers are Cricket Fans and may have mistaken the 47/1 statistic as a West Indies Cricket Score. All balls aside, no one in office seems to have the will to treat the Crime situation with the proper thought and attention needed, opting to bat out Bills in Parliament which are a sure recipe for chaos in the name of (pretending) to deal with Crime. Fear dictating policy is bad enough, but when it is twisted to harness political mileage in passing absurd laws, it shows that Governance has never been a priority.

stop_being_poor_doggie_shirt-rfee5e9fb14d740ae9ad7b70dca1790ee_v9w7f_8byvr_324As money passes hands in the underground by the hundreds for petty bandits, and Millions (if not Billion) by the suit & tie cartels, the man on the road (no not in a Mas band, carnival aint come yet relax) is facing all the problems associated with the post-Christmas, Pre-Carnival, and regular daily struggle combined. We see Billion Dollar Projects to be approved from our Tax Dollars, and Politically appointed State employees running around their sugar mommies and daddies with their lips puckered to their rears. At the same time we see those who have no political affiliation, or who are seen on the “wrong” side of the spectrum either being bought off or totally isolated. But it’s almost Carnival right? So whoever can afford it can jump up, and whoever can’t can go jump in a hole as far as those in power are concerned.

half mast copyThe year has only now started, and both Government and Opposition are gearing up not only for their own Internal Elections, but eyeing 2015 as well. Socially we a   re gearing up in cardboard armour to protect ourselves from day to day victimization, and our own vices. So there you have it my fellow Trinbagonians and others alike. The State of the Nation Address: In the Middle of Nowhere, right between a rock and a hard place, opposite the Cemetery, down the road from the Poor House….
