Soca & Police

Posted: January 28, 2015 in Uncategorized

A video of Police opening a fire on a civilian Soca Artiste (identified as Benjai) surfaced on the News and Social Media. At first it appeared as gangsterism on the part of the Police, but upon further investigation into the matter a different story is apparent. The facts as compiled by eye witnesses reports and a closer look showed that the officers who opened fire were Presidential Escorts in the process of protecting the head of state. The Artiste was seen breaching the President’s motorcade, and was cut off as well as waved off multiple times by the marked Police Vehicle. Upon this major breach of security he continued to follow the President’s vehicle behind the marked Police SUV until an officer discharged gunfire from the window, puncturing the civilian’s vehicle’s back tyre.

Better than I can say it, Kes should show up by Benjai’s house and sing a live version of his new song ‘Look fuh dat.’ Any vehicle breaching the Head of State’s (or any guarded state vehicle for that matter) is a threat to the security of the person being guarded. The police saw little more than a car which made multiple attempts to break security and come near the president’s vehicle, choosing to first use the discretion of signalling warnings. This is far different than a man walking down the road and police blocking him off and roughing him up, or opening fire to cover up being taped, this was procedure in protecting the President from a highly possible threat (from their view).

The manner in which they disabled the vehicle was a testament to their training as the shots were far from wild, hitting the back tyre with a short burst of shots. Those who have handled weapons in anything beyond a stationary manner would know that this isn’t the simplest thing to do while hanging outside of a moving vehicle and aiming at another. That being said, The Artiste was very lucky as in the US they quite likely would have fired at the driver rather than the vehicle. Unfortunately these men who are actually trained well will have to feel the blunt of being accused of acting “recklessly” and “like bandit” from the public due to a reputation earned in recent times from inexperienced trigger happy elements of the service.

coatofarms2This is a good opportunity however to reflect on what our Rights are, as well as what they Not are. A person has the right to enjoy Freedom of Movement, but you can’t go walking through a crime scene (contaminating evidence etc). You have Freedom of Speech but can’t threaten people and curse like a $5 jamet in public (hopefully not anyway). The law has its regulations and the Constitution it’s Limits. Please ensure that along with knowing what you Can do, you know what you Cannot do. And in closing, please reflect that even if you can do something, should you do it? The above however was a case of Couldn’t, Shouldn’t, but ultimately did. Apparently, Soca didn’t give him his powers….

Why I Vex

Posted: January 21, 2015 in Uncategorized

Warning, a serious “who vex loss” article, read with caution and a cinnamon mint in your mouth:
ab1

Pain talk I vex, vex and shame. This week I SHAME to be be a Trini, shame of my own people, shame of where we are as a society. To anyone that thinks I’m being “unpatriotic,” go dress up and jump around in a Trini flag for Independence day and wine to the ground in a Carnival band, because that is as far as loving the country that most here get. The last 7 days have been chaos in the country but the underlying bacchanalia of Carnival has everyone glassy eyed waiting for the next Soca song while not caring about any news other than what fete happening and how they could get the money to attend. In the last week we’ve had a racist out pour against a chinese weed dealer, a wheelchair bound man on the roll from police for a double homicide, o and an unauthorized Caribbean Airlines flights misses colliding with a Jet blue flight by seconds which could have killed everyone on at least one plane….And our University students can’t get last semesters grades but it’s all good to us apparently….

ab2“Every Creed and Race Find and Equal Place,” is one of (if not the most) inspiring lines of our National Anthem, but it is just blank words that we recite it seems. However when it comes to the public gallery, once someone in the lime light is fair skin it’s open season for whatever idiocy follows. A Chinese boy who dropped out of UWI was caught $500 000 of Marijuana in his apartment. He is by all standards a criminal by doing this, and yes indeed needs to face trial and answer for his crimes (as well as hopefully give evidence as to who else is involved in his network). The Crime however was not the focus but the coverage of him being a minority race in Trinidad and Tobago became a nexus for commentary from the uneducated and prejudice alike. According to public opinion; because the kid is chinese he is “Privileged,” “Rich,” and corrupting “Simple People Children.” And apparently him covering his face with a hoodie zipped up leaving the courtroom is somehow different than when anyone else does it with a bag, towel, or jersey (note that persons are allowed to cover their face when they leave court for long enough to get into a vehicle once media is present, but no further). And apparently he has been treated differently by wearing a hoodie to the court, when most people wouldn’t realize that he was in Magistrate’s court (where you go to trial in what you are arrested in), as opposed to High Court where you must be in a more formal attire. He is out on Bail of $150 000, note BAIL IS NOT A FINE, it is a provision to ensure that he shows up to court on his trial dates or his family will lose that surety and he will remain in jail until the trial is concluded. However my fellow Trinis have resorted straight to racist comments without a second thought. To my shame, I live in a country overflowing with racism and an unwillingness to be educated about procedure.

ab3Next off we have a man on the run from Police, or rather on the roll as he is wheelchair bound following breaking both of his legs in a car accident. He was being harboured by a family of whom he was in a relationship with their 19 year old daughter, after being on the run already from police for murdering one former lover (and chopping his daughter). Doctors came to treat him at home, as he couldn’t go to hospital after the accident, but it is unclear whether or not the doctors know about his past. In any case this girl did, and it was said that her parents had an idea of it. He shot her, then got a ride to wherever he went to get away. The Running joke of the nation is that the police haven’t able to catch a wheelchair bound man. I throw this out there however, how would they catch him if no one sells him out? He can’t walk, someone is feeding, sheltering, and taking care of him, unless someone opens their mouth all investigations lead to nowhere fast. However it is disturbing that he was not caught before and this is a major problem with the Police Service’s results in TnT, the inability to catch someone for committing a crime now, allows other crimes to occur. He isn’t the only murderer on the loose though and crime continues to run rampant during this season, bandit have to fete too right? We are in a dangerous country and it is not getting better, but crime , falling gas prices internationally, it’s all good if we costume booked ent?

'This will be interesting, let's show them who's the chicken here.'As if the state of prejudice and unconcern weren’t enough, what would tnt be without dotishness and baccanal? All over US news a Caribbean Airlines flight speeds down a runway unauthorized, and nearly collides with a Jet Blue aircraft. Caribbean Airlines has a recording of their Pilot saying to Jet Blue that she was coming through, but JFK gave CAL no approval to take off, and on their recording it seems that Caribbean Airlines didn’t hear or ignored repeated attempts from air control to communicate. Jet Blue had approve to take off and CAL didn’t so 2 Air crafts full of passengers could have been killed in an instant because a local Pilot buss a bad drive on the runway… That news report in the US however was under a 3 minute clip, and a Soca song is more than 3, so by we logic Soca must be more important. This can be well displayed in the newspapers the next day as the cover was Machel performing in UWI Fete.  And speaking of UWI Fete, that would have been the perfect time for students to protest their grades being held back due to administration’s inability to pay lecturers their back pay. UWI Students come better please, actually don’t come at all again because the matter is almost over. The Guild failed to mobilize, and the students are concerned enough to rant on facebook but not enough to forego a fete and protests only went as far as dress up and protest limes. It’s all good though because what is the point of education when held up next to who’s pick for road march wins?

There you have it, a week in ‘Paradise,’ and that is only the Social Aspect, if I was to get into the daily political baccanal the web space costs would send me straight to the poorhouse. This is what my beloved country has come to, and to those who think I’m just ‘Hating’ on my country, I put forward that nothing in this country will fix if we continue to ignore the flaws in society which allow the mentalities in the issues above to prevail. After this ‘Madman’s Rant’ I’ve been on here, I leave those who think we are a proud great country of butterfly wonder and rainbow beauty, especially those who do so to sweep our flaws under the carpet for personal gain or totally reckless drunken merriment with this quote- “Patriotism is the last refuge of a Scoundrel- (Samuel Johnson)”

And that is WHY I VEX.

Nothing About Much Ado

Cruise Ship Sinking
At a time of Panic and Instability with oil prices hitting a decade’s low at $47 a barrel (cutting our state revenue significantly), our distinguished PM puts all news stations on alert to broadcast her Address to the Nation. Trinidad and Tobago braced for a major resolution to tackle the problem and the following are some key points as she went along, with commentary. Just when we thought we would see the first PM announcement that was actually delivered on time, our ever prepared leader misplaced her glasses leaving her introducer to sweat and stall on the podium with nothing to say, allowing her to muster the breath for a top to bottom PR outburst. Somehow this seems like a true representation of what governance in TnT has been like over the last 4 years. Pressing on following this set up….

-Navigating the situation with “Responsible Fiscal Policy” that the Government has displayed
They couldn’t navigate a Partnership for more than 2 years before people were jumping overboard. On top of that 5 deficit budgets in a row, with massive foreign debt, US Dollar shortage…”Responsible Fiscal Policy”

-Maintained 3% Unemployment rate
Seems strange that this is the figure when every other person you ask (without a government party card), is complaining about finding a job. What is stranger is that this figure was expressed by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and includes Cepep and URP, which the Minister of Housing boasted that the government has doubled… High praise for day-wuk that pays the same a day as 1 barrel of oil right now is valued at. Note to a variety of Ministers: Social Dependency programs are not sustainable employment.

-Private Sector Footprint Strong
The only footprint from Private Institutions under this government has been from the Boot of the large corporations boots on the necks of those not of an elite class. Most of the Private Sector has been upheld on Government Contracts, and financiers have become successful in the “Business world” off of much less merit than mamaguy,

-Staying Afloat
The impaired Captains of our economy decided to equip the Prime Minister with the statement that we will be saving $1Billion state fund by cutting back on subsidies (brace for us to feel the pinch), boasting of this even though we will be losing over $7Billion. A cheap double talk about how we can be making , yet losing at the same time….And a relation that they will be selling share of our National gas company, so now that stock price is low, they friends and financiers will be able to get approval from inside to own part of our oil wealth for generations and administrations to come regardless of who is in power.

-Moving Forward: No Social Cutbacks and Continued Projects
15% would be cut from certain Ministries, yet no Social Programs or Billions in construction projects will be reviewed or touched. First of all cutting out some of the overlapping Ministries and some of the over 30 Ministers (one of the largest Cabinets in the world), did not occur? Their Salaries, expense account, appointment salaries , etc..all of the Millions that are spend on “Jobs for de boys” would be a viable cut back but I guess it’s too much to hope for some sense of responsibility in spending. Programs won’t be reviewed, which is how we ended up with things like Lifesport run wild under this administration. And of course the big boys in building the structures that we can’t staff in poorly conceived projects can’t be touched either, campaign funding will be needed this year anyway….

In closing and again a good example of the Government’s overall policy, The Prime Minister has just mandated the Minister of Finance to monitor the Economy and situation. Which begs the question, what the hell was he doing all along? In the End, the PM Made a campaign speech with amounted to Nothing about a situation that deserved Much Ado.
